So What is Hypnobirthing?
I’ll be honest, I remember the first time I heard about it…. A Mum said to me that she planned to use hypnobirthing techniques to help her to in labour and I remember smiling politely and saying something like ‘Ok that sounds GREAT’ whilst secretly thinking to myself ‘well, good luck with that’. That same lady went on to birth her baby whilst her midwives deliberated who would go for lunch first - they were confident she wasn’t yet in active labour! I can so clearly remember my colleague gleefully recounting the story to me - that was us told!
I still think the name is a bit of a misfit. It sounds very hippy and not something that would appeal to me at all, let alone actually work and have an evidence base. People often mistakenly relate it to stage hypnosis and think they will be put in some kind of ‘state’ where they will humiliate themselves, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Hypnobirthing involves the use of self-hypnosis to enter a state of deep relaxation in order to remain calm and comfortable during birth. That’s it!
